Minors in French

Students in many different Majors across the University have found that to have a Minor in French is extremely useful upon graduation, when employers begin assessing them as job candidates. (A Minor entails about half the credits of a Major; completion of a Minor is specified on the permanent FAU transcript.) Obviously, a student who completes the Minor is no longer monolingual, but skillful in both French and in bi-cultural thinking. In addition, French Minors train students in particular emphases, depending upon their interests and career plans: in Literature and Culture (18 credits) and in Business French (19 credits).

When and where should you begin a Minor? Students who enter the University with no experience in the language may register for the Minor immediately upon completing FRE 1120 and 1121 (i.e., the two-semester sequence used to meet the FAU foreign-language requirement), and begin the Minor with FRE 2203. Simply ask your instructor for a Minor Application form to fill out, or go the Department of Languages and Linguistics Office (AH 118). All other students should see Mme Reese (cereese@fau.edu) or Mme Friedman (friedman@fau.edu) for placement in a French course.

Note that of all courses acceptable for the Minors, only FRE 2203 may be taken by CLEP exam (offered at University Testing, 297-3160). To receive credit, the exam must be taken before you begin a higher course, i.e., FRE 2204 and above. CLEP immediately!
